In this session, we will put the “clinical” back into clinical phonetics. Specifically, we will discuss how vowel contexts can be used strategically to facilitate correct sound production within speech sound therapy. We will review the vowel quadrilateral and the anatomical/ physiological requirements for production of vowels. We will focus primarily on correct production of /ɹ/ and the fricatives affected by lateral lisps. Additionally, we will include a brief discussion of how to choose speech sound targets to achieve quicker acquisition of phonemes.
