Amy, Jennie, and Rebecca are speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who have a special interest and extensive experience in assessing and treating a wide range of speech sound disorders. This three hour course will target three different topics: Elicitation Strategies: Lateral Lisp and R Tips by Amy Graham - Many SLPs find correcting lateral lisps and residual /r/ errors among children to be extremely challenging. Lateral lisps are articulatory distortions and not developmental in nature, which means that children with such errors should be treated early (McLeod & Baker, 2017). In addition, we now know that most children acquire /r/ by the age of 6 (Crowe & McCLeod, 2020), though SLPs frequently have older children with these residual articulation errors and distortions on their caseloads. Since we know that children who are not stimulable for such sounds are less likely to acquire them without treatment (Rvachew, 2005), focussing on elicitation is imperative but can also be daunting. This presentation will focus on particular elicitation strategies that can be effective for children who have such habituated and motorically-based errors and distortions, such as phonetic approximation and cognitive reframing. Practical therapy tips, video demonstrations, and target selection recommendations will be outlined that can help children move from isolation level to varied word positions contexts. How to Get More Trials in Your Speech Therapy Session by Rebecca Reinking - Many SLPs have heard that you should aim for 100 production trials in your speech therapy session, but where did this number come from? Is it true for all speech sound interventions? And HOW do you get more practice in your session? This presentation is filled with videos and real-life therapy pictures to equip you with simple, functional changes to make to your therapy to encourage high speech productions trials with the latest evidence in mind. Target Selection for Childhood Apraxia by Jennie Bjorem - Target selection is one of the most important parts of successful motor based planning therapy. What do you need to know? This course will cover target selection beginning to end and challenge everything you know about choosing targets for kids with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). You will walk away feeling empowered ready to choose functional targets in CAS therapy. Based off of Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) approach.
