There is a base of evidence for the benefit and effectiveness of relationships, and specifically their usefulness in treatment. Professionally speaking there are relationships that exist all around us — caregiver, inter-professional, administrative, etc. A critical relationship in our field exists between that of the speech-language pathologist (SLP) and speech-language pathology assistant (SLPA). The scope and practice of these roles are essential to our field. The health of this dynamic can be a definitive indicator of consumer outcomes. The more attuned and collaborative an SLP/SLPA team is, the better benefit to both professionals, and ultimately the consumer. In this course, participants will learn strategies beyond the rules and regulations of an SLPA’s scope. While these are vital to the proper use and operation of an SLPA, an SLPA’s benefit is maximized only when the base of evidence of this vital relationship is applied. The SLP/SLPA dynamic is the vehicle that effectively transports the more technical aspects of supervision and scope.
