AAC that Sticks: Strategies for Building Staff Capacity

This course explores how to create sustainable AAC implementation by building staff buy-in and ownership. Rather than focusing on device training, participants will learn practical strategies for fostering communication partner engagement through purpose-driven coaching, collaborative planning, and small, sustainable habit changes. Drawing on work by Elena Aguilar and James Clear, this presentation provides actionable tools to help AAC practices become embedded into everyday classroom routines so AAC sticks.

AAC that Sticks: Strategies for Building Staff Capacity

This course will be live on Monday, July 27, 2026, at 3 pm Eastern Time. Replays will follow immediately and will be available through Aug. 15, 2026.

Effective augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) implementation does not happen in isolation. It thrives when supported by teams who believe in what is possible for their students and for themselves. While AAC conversations often focus on student outcomes, this presentation shifts the lens to a critical, yet sometimes overlooked element of success: building staff capacity.

This session provides a practical framework for supporting staff in developing sustainable AAC practices, beginning with the foundational belief that every team member is capable of growth. Drawing from Elena Aguilar’s Arise and integrating principles from James Clear’s Atomic Habits, this session applies adult coaching and behavior-change frameworks to the context of AAC implementation.

Participants will explore how to identify the underlying causes of communication partner resistance by recognizing that reluctance is rarely rooted in a lack of care for students. Rather than focusing on increasing competence through device and app training, we dive into the core human need of purpose and how to transform beliefs around AAC. Participants will learn how to co-construct plans and will explore how to make AAC implementation obvious, attractive, easy, and satisfying within existing classroom routines.
