This course is a follow-up to the Bright Ideas, Foundations of Communication Course section 1 and 2.

Section 3 will primarily focus on assessment for students who would benefit from some type of augmented communication system. Assessing students with complex communication needs has proven challenging for professionals from a variety of disciplines in school settings.

This course will provide assessment suggestions organized around the Student Environment Tasks and Tools (SETT) framework which provides information that is student specific and educationally relevant. The course introduces the audience to a variety of standard and non-standard, authentic assessments to determine what forms of assistive technology might be useful for the individual and suggests communication goals that are educationally relevant. The course will conclude with an analysis of the assessment data specific to the case study and a discussion of considerations for goals and possible augmented systems.
