SLP Summit (Summer '24)

This kick-off session for the July SLP Summit will establish the tone and tenor of the online conference—change is necessary, and this is how we compassionately engage. Utilizing two decades of experience supporting school districts and new qualitative research related to Overwhelmed School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP), Phuong will utilize the 60 minutes to invest in an advocacy framework to support the invisible load of speech-language therapists within their respective settings. The course, embedded in humanity anchors, will address methodologies for others’ understanding of SLP roles and responsibilities, culturally responsive agency and, ultimately, maximizing communication outcomes in ways that align with our professional duties and personal, humanly needs.

This course is designed to empower special education professionals with practical strategies to foster collaboration within their teams. Participants will learn five key hacks to enhance goal creation, data collection, data analysis, communication, and lesson planning through collaborative efforts. Each hack is paired with engaging activities to ensure participants can immediately apply the concepts in their educational settings. By the end of the course, educators will have the tools and confidence to create a more cohesive and effective special education team.

This course delves into the importance of understanding and assessing pragmatic language skills, particularly the production of figurative expressions in adolescents from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Participants will gain insights into the correlation between figurative language use and higher language functioning. Through a combination of practical examples, literature reviews, and data analysis, attendees will learn strategies to assess and identify higher functioning language skills such as the use of figurative expressions to increase diagnostic accuracy. *This course satisfies ASHA's DEI requirement*

This session highlights the clinical process of independent phonological assessment and analyses: characterization, reorganization, and progress monitoring. Child data will demonstrate the rapid system-wide gains children with phonological disorders make when taught complex consonant clusters.

This course aims to underscore the significance of offering services to underserved adolescents. We will begin with an emphasis on the importance of adolescents by delving into current statistics and discussing the potential lifelong consequences of language disorders. Next, we will offer practical goals and activities that SLPs can implement when working with adolescents. Finally, we will propose ways SLPs can advocate effectively for adolescents with language disorders, ensuring they receive the necessary support and resources needed for academic and social success.
